Mountain Biking Trails

Canmore is a mountain biking paradise, with a vast network of trails that cater to all skill levels. From gentle beginner trails to challenging expert routes, there is something for everyone. The trails in Canmore offer a mix of technical singletrack, flowy descents, and breathtaking views.

From beginners to advanced bikers, the Canmore Nordic Centre is a great place to start. The trails here are well-maintained and offer a mix of easy and intermediate routes. The Nordic Centre also offers bike rentals and lessons for those who are new to the sport. Visit Trail Sports to learn more.

For more experienced riders, the Highline Trail is a must-try. This trail offers a challenging climb followed by a thrilling descent, with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Other popular trails for advanced riders include the Montane Traverse and the Reclaimer Trail.

Cloudline is a new cross-country style multi-use trail that runs between Three Sisters Creek and Stewart Creek. Completed in 2023, this new trail takes approximately 40 minutes to complete and is great for intermediate bikers. 

The Goat Creek Trail is a popular biking trail, which begins just outside of Canmore, typically starting at the Goat Creek Day Use Area, which is easily accessible from the Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park. The trail stretches approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) one way, making it a moderate bike ride. There are some elevation changes and occasional rocky sections. While it’s suitable for most skill levels, beginners may find some parts challenging.

Road Biking Trails

Canmore also offers a variety of road biking routes. The town is surrounded by scenic roadways that wind through the mountains and offer breathtaking views. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely ride or a challenging climb, there is something for everyone.

One popular road biking route in Canmore is the Legacy Trail. This paved pathway connects Canmore to Banff and offers stunning views of the Bow River and surrounding mountains. The Legacy Trail is 22 kilometers (14 miles)  and  is suitable for riders of all skill levels and is a great option for families.

Bow Valley Trail (1A) from Banff to Lake Louise is a locals favourite and even better during seasonal summer closures. It offers some nice windy sections, scenery and wildlife sightings such as bears and the occasional wolf!

For more experienced riders, the Highwood Pass is a challenging route that offers stunning views of Spray Lakes. This road is very busy in the summer so best to do it before June 15th. From the beginning of Hwy 40, the top of the pass is 78 kilometers (48 miles).

Have a gravel bike? Take the Smith Dorrien from the Canmore Nordic Centre to Spray Lakes (for a cold plunge) or further to Peter Lougheed Provincial Park and back! One way is about 90 kilometers (55 miles). 

Family Friendly Biking Trails

Canmore is a great destination for families looking to enjoy some outdoor fun on two wheels. The town offers a variety of family-friendly biking trails that are suitable for riders of all ages and skill levels.

One popular trail for families is the Bow River Loop. This easy, hard-pack trail follows the Bow River and offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The trail is relatively flat and is suitable for riders of all ages.

Another family-friendly option is the Canmore Recreation Centre Loop. This trail is located near the town center and offers a mix of paved and gravel paths. The loop is relatively short and is a great option for families with young children.
